Magic of Mastiha

One of our favorite things about our skincare line, Lira Clinical, is their secret ingredient found naturally on our lovely planet.We know many of you are using this product at home, but we want you to fully fall in love with the benefits.

Mastiha, comes from the resin of Pistacia Lentiscus trees. These are ancient trees that only grow on the southwest coast of Chios in the Mediterranean. Mastiha’s properties are rooted in over 60 medicinal uses, including dental hygiene, healing surgical sutures and gastrointestinal problems. The Magic of Turmeric

As most of you have probably heard the word Turmeric in the Indian food culture, this magical spice has been used in the beauty & health industry for centuries to heal, cure, and subside many body issues.


Here is a a few benefits of Turmeric and ideas of how you can use it for everyday issues!


Treatment for Acne & Oily Skin:
Because Turmeric is an antibacterial and antiseptic spice, these properties help to aide out the bacteria of breakouts, and control the sebaceous glands to regulate the production of oil.

What to (not) look for when purchasing Skincare Products

Having a hard time deciding what skincare products to use?
Let me help you narrow down your decision, by informing you of a few common ingredients you should probably avoid!


Parabens– Widely used in products to preserve or prolong artificial ‘fragrances’. These are easy penetrated chemicals, that go into the body and act as hormones. Parabens have been linked to the tissues found in breast cancer. Known to active dermatitis, eczema, and rosacea.
Label to look for: Most Parabans will have the word ‘Paraban’ in it, such as Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.


Diethanolamine (DEA)– A chemical used to produce a ‘lather’ in cleansers. Known to create a potent carcinogen called NDEA, which is absorbed into the skin and linked to bladder, liver, kidney, and stomach cancers. Some say that this chemical has to be combined with certain products to produce its negative effects, but this chemical has already been banned in other countries, so it must have some concern!
Label to look for: DEA, Diethanolamine, Cocamide DEA, DEA Lauryl Sulfate


Sulfates–  In cleansers sulfates work as surfactants: water- and oil-soluble compounds that when combined with water, foam and emulsify greasy substances. After using a cleanser with sulfates, you may feel squeaky clean, more dry than moisturized, and that no more oil is on your face.. but what this chemical is doing, is actually just stripping the skin of our natural oils, that protect the barrier. And because the oil is being stripped away, our skin is being told to produce more oil, to compensate what it has lost! (This goes the same with your scalp and hair) Sulfates are also known as the number one ‘skin irritant’. If you have an allergic reaction to a product, sulfates are almost always involved!
Label to look for: Sulfate, SLS, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate


Fragrance– If you look on many skin care products, the word ‘fragrance’ pops up in the ingredient list. Your product may smell good, but have you ever wondered what that smell is actually made of? Fragrance is one ingredient that the FDA does not regulate as strictly as they probably should. One word, can mean hundreds of chemicals, forming a scent. Many of these synthetic chemicals can cause negative side effects such as: headaches, asthma attacks, allergies, and rashes. Another dangerous part of this word is phthalates. Most synthetic fragrances are stabilized with phthalates. Pthalates are a group of chemicals used to soften and increase flexibility. This chemical compound has traced back to high levels of developmental and reproductive toxicity. Important to stay away from ‘fragrance’ while pregnant and breast feeding!
Label to look for: Fragrance, Perfume, Parfum


Formaldehyde– Known as a human carcinogen, formaldehyde is a colorless, strong smelling gas, that is toxic to the human body in many ways. This chemical has been linked to cases of lukemia, and it initiates the formation of tumors. There is no facts that exposure to formaldehyde alone, has been linked to cancer; but when mixed with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (that are common in skin care products), a gas called ‘nitrosamines’ forms and is absorbed and penetrated through the skin, and that chemical has been linked to cancer. Formadehyde is classified as a high-grade allergen, causing chemical burns on the skin when applied topically with products containing this chemical.
Label to look for: Formaldehyde, Quaternium-15, DMDM hydantoin, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate


When purchasing skin care, you want it to be as clean as possible! Look for ‘sulfate-free, paraban-free, artificial fragrance/chemical-free’ products! Keep your skin glowing, and your body happy!

Bring on the Sun!


Mineral Based Sunscreens VS. Chemical Sunscreens
Summer is around the corner, although I am all for that natural VITA-D, you need to make sure to be protected! Many Clients have asked me the best sunscreen to use on their face, whether it be to prevent irritation and breakouts, cancer-causing sun rays, and cancer-causing chemical ingredients. Here is a brief answer to what the difference is between active ingredients in sunscreens and/or sunblock.

Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide:

Zinc Oxide is the most common active ingredient in most professional and ‘natural’ based skin care lines. Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are minerals that do not dissolve into sunscreens and absorb into your skin. Both minerals work by sitting on the top layer of your skin, where they then scatter, absorb, and reflect ultraviolet radiation, protecting the living skin in your dermis layers below. Zinc Oxide, is a full spectrum blocker, protecting from UVA, UVB, and UVC. Titanium Dioxide is also used alongside Zinc Oxide to help protect from UVB rays, but is not as affective in protecting against UVA rays. Titanium Dioxide is mainly used in mineral makeup that contain an SPF. Just know that when using makeup with an SPF double check that it contains Zinc Oxide as well or you won’t be protected from all the sun rays!

Oxybenzone, Oxtinoxate, Octisalate etc.

These are all known as an active ingredient in synthetic chemical sunscreens.

These chemicals are significantly different than a mineral base compound. They ONLY work by absorbing into the skin. These chemicals produce free-radicals, and because they work when absorbed, they are releasing these free-radicals into the bloodstream. Oxybenzone is a popular spectrum blocker, but also one of the most troublesome to your health. This chemical has been believed to cause hormone unbalance, and cell damage that may provoke cancer. It gets into the blood-steam, and acts like estrogen in the body. Many people will develop an allergic reaction, and many health risks linking to this chemical.

Wake up & Smell the COFFEE!

Are you a coffee lover? This AMAZING, and very easy coffee scrub recipe will have even those non-lovers, LOVIN’ coffee!


What you Need:
2 tbs ground organic coffee
2 tbs organic coconut oil
1 tbs organic ground cinnamon
1 tsp hot water


Mix coffee and coconut oil into a bowl, add cinnamon and water once chunks of oil are mixed until smooth! Place into a jar, and scrub that bod clean!


Coffee Scrubs are essential for those who suffer from body acne, eczema, psoriasis, cellulite, and stretch marks!


For best results, scrub every other night. It is always best to apply in the shower, because coffee can be a little messy! You want to scrub the problematic area for about 60 seconds in a circular motion, leave on area anywhere from 3-5 min before rising! For sensitive skin, add more water to the body while scrubbing!
This scrub is safe to use full body, face to toes!

Hold the Dairy


“Do you eat dairy?”
That is the always the first question I ask my acneic clients when they come to see me.
Why does eating dairy matter? Let me explain, in the simplest way.

First, the facts:

We seem to be the only species that drink milk after infancy, and
we are the only species that drink another species milk.
Cows milk contains three times more protein than our human milk. This amount of protein consumption causes metabolic disturbances.
75% of the worlds population is lactose intolerant, meaning, humans do not create the lactose enzymes the body needs to breakdown dairy.
Majority of the cows in America, are injected with synthetic hormones and antibiotics to’plump’ the cow to produce more. Even those that are not injected with hormones or antibiotics, and are ‘grass fed organic’ still contain higher levels of hormones, than any other animal we ingest.

milk1Why do those with acne prone skin develop a new zit,
after each time they consume dairy?

Humans have grown, technology has advanced, and hormones have significantly increased. Whether you are on a synthetic form of hormones for a variety of reasons, or you are just rocking your natural balance of hormones, dairy can and will affect your levels.
Have you ever noticed why every breakout on a woman is in the same area? (jawline/upper cheeks)
Your skin is showing that your hormones are unhappy.
When dairy enters the body, your natural hormones mix with the synthetic hormones from the dairy and they create a reaction of too many hormones.
Did you know that for acne-prone skin, even the smallest 1% trace of hormones in food, can mix with yours and affect your levels, causing a new outbreak immediately?

Food will affect your skin, it’s in the facts. If you are struggling with breakouts, try eliminating ALL dairy for 2-4 weeks. It takes a while for it to completely get out of the body, but i guarantee you will see a decrease in breakouts within 2 weeks.

Remember* crackers, bread, salad dressings, chips- EVERYTHING now days contain dairy, make sure to look at the ingredient list before you assume! If you are not strict with this, you will not see results.

A few other foods to stay away from for acne prone skin:
Red Meat, iodized salt, algae, seaweed, tofu, kelp, canola oil; supplements with biotin, whey or soy.

There is a reason they say, you are what you eat!

O is for Organic

As many of you know, the past few months I have been studying why nearly everyone aged from 8 to 80 nowadays has a skin problem (mainly studying acne).

I have been a skincare provider going on 5 years now, and each year my acneic clientele doubles. Not only have I noticed an acne increase in my clients’ skin, but my own skin has been freaking out as well. I have decided to start sharing my journey to help my clients and anyone else who struggles with keeping a glowing complexion.

With a little change in your product use,  your health and fitness, and to eating clean, your skin should turn around and be smoother than ever!
Now, it’s not going to magically get better over one night of change, but within a couple weeks, you will see a difference!

From my personal studies and what I have gathered so far, our food sources play a huge role with your skin. Some may agree, some may disagree; and that’s what makes us human.
This morning, while doing some reading on food in the U.S., I decided to use a little reverse psychology on myself.

I wanted to share a little food for thought, literally.
I realized that the term “GMO” has become such a trend throughout the U.S. right now.
So I thought to myself, “what if we change the way we labeled a NON-GMO item.”
(side note) Very few of us pay attention to labeling anyways, right? Plus, what makes us believe a label is even 100% true?

What if grocery stores, for all fruits, veggies, dairy and meats, had a sign below the product, listing what ‘synthetic chemicals’ or ‘pesticides’ if you will, the farmer used on or in that certain food?
I mean a tomato is a tomato, right? When you ask someone what is a tomato? They would say its a vegetable, of course. It starts by a seed, you plant in the ground, eventually after some TLC, grows up on a vine, and when it turns red, you eat it. There is no ‘ingredient list’ for a vegetable, because why would we need one? In fact, there is no ingredients in raw meats, dairy products, or fruits either. Because everyone knows a banana, is a banana. No other ingredients are used in these 4 categories.

Unfortunately, that is wrong.

I wonder if we actually saw a list of the 15 pesticide residues that were tested in one single strawberry, would that change the way we eat?
I wonder if acne rates would go down?
I wonder if hormone levels would balance out?
And most importantly, I wonder if diseases would decrease?

Did you know that nearly 99% of the produce in the U.S. contains pesticide residue?

Do you know how your liver breaks down that pesticide residue?
Yup, you guessed it, it doesn’t, and your skin shows all.

Acne prone skin, is most affected by these chemicals.
If you get acne from your mid to high cheeks, this means your liver is trying to purge out toxins.
Toxins from what you are putting into your body.

I will guarantee you that when you start to eat clean; that means no synthetic hormones, pesticides, or sugars,
your liver will start to cleanse, and your cheek acne will fade.

Now, that is a hard thing to cut out of your life. Almost everything you eat contains some type of toxin, but if those breakouts are driving you crazy, it wont hurt to eliminate these three things for at least two weeks, and watch the improvement!

To make you next grocery run easy- follow these guidelines of produce that were tested high and low in pesticide residues.

High Levels:
Apples, Peaches, Nectarines, Bell Peppers, Celery, Strawberries, Blueberries, Cherries, Pears, Grapes, Spinach, Lettuce, Kale,Tomatoes, Potatoes.

Low Levels:
(safer to conventionally eat)
Avocados, Pineapples, Mangoes, Asparagus, Bananas, Sweet Corn, Cabbage, Broccoli, Papaya, Kiwi, Eggplant, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Oranges.
