Classic vs Volume

The Back Story of Lash Extensions

As lash artists, we strive to be perfect technique, not only within our work, but also within the trends and lifestyles of the world around us. Classic eyelash extensions are the center of the lash extension trends. They are the nucleus, the root of the creation, and the experiment.

When individual eyelash extensions first came around, lash manufacturers developed a way to make a synthetic lash to adhere to your natural lash. This initial method produced results that lasted around two weeks, and the key feature was the synthetic pieces could fall off as your natural lash grew out and shed. Over the years of giving women that “more-than-mascara” look, they developed an even bolder, darker look: Volume eyelash extensions!

The Difference

So, what exactly is the difference between the two types of lashes? Classic and volume lashes are both made out of the same material, varying from synthetic mink, to silk, to real mink hair. They are both attached in the same fashion to the lash line, and both styles feel the same on the eyes. However, when applying classic lashes they should be either the same diameter, or up to double the diameter, of your natural lashes. Therefore, you can only apply one synthetic lash to one of your natural lashes. Since we have about 150 lashes on each eye, we can place about 150 lashes on your lash line, so we are only able to get them as full as the amount of natural lashes you already have. Classic lashes will give you a natural, yet fuller and bolder look than mascara will while not providing a much more dramatic appearance. They’re perfect for easy mornings with no mascara and very little maintenance.

Volume lash extensions provide a glamorous look without actually having to apply strip lashes on a daily basis. Since volume lash diameters are so thin, your lash artist can attach multiple lashes together creating the coveted fan-like lash line. Multiple lashes from a volume lash will equal the diameter of your natural lash. With volume you will have a fuller, darker and bolder lash line, and because it will fan on the top, it will be fluffier and more intense than a set of classic lashes. Volume lashes come in many diameters, but for an example using 10 single volume lashes, will equal the diameter of your natural lash. Therefore, it is okay to use more lashes on one natural lash with volume. Volume lashes are perfect for those who want that dark top eyeliner look and a noticeably fluffier silhouette. The bigger the better with volume.

How Do I Pick Between Classic And Volume Lash Extensions?

When determining the level of lashes that suits you and your style, it’s best to start small. In fact, most people start with classic lash extensions before deciding on a darker more dramatic aesthetic. The classic lash look will give you a beautiful longer, fuller, and darker lash line. If you have never worn lashes before, and you are not use to strip lashes, then getting classic lashes won’t be as much of a shock to you. When you’re ready to try a full lash line with a fluffier, darker aesthetic, our lash techs can help you transition to a hybrid or volume set. There are four tiers of lash lengths and thicknesses that start with classics and proceed into hybrid, then volume, and then mega volume.

Tips For The New Lash Artists

Eyelash extension application is not for everyone, though I highly recommend taking a course if this is something that interests you. Do not judge whether you love it or hate it after your first set. This is something that will take around five different sets to really get a pulse on if you enjoy the process or not. If you’re looking to start training up a new skill, you should be practicing a couple times a week to gain the muscle memory in your hands and get faster. After you become a certified lash artist, it is very important to practice your new skill regularly, and keep learning. It will be common for clients, and yourself, to want to be able to get them fuller, but just keep working at it. Do not rush into volume too fast. You will want to make sure you know how to isolate the natural lashes skillfully and place all extensions in a straight even line. Your lash sets should be at least 75 percent full before taking on the next technique. Once you have mastered classic eyelash extensions, the next class you’ll need to take is a volume lashing class. Volume lash application can be very frustrating at first. It looks much easier than it is, but once you dig in there I promise, it will change your business.

As you continue to get more familiar with eyelash extensions, you will be able to determine the best look and style for you or for your clients. Every eye is different, meaning every shape and style will be different from person to person. However, when you choose the right technique and style of lashes, you can really bring out the best feature on someone’s face!
